Gut Health and Taking Supplements

Hello friends!

Digestion is the foundation of health.  If you are not properly digesting the food you are eating you are not giving your body the nutrition it needs to function. After your food enters your mouth and you begin chewing, the enzymes in your saliva start to break down carbohydrates. It is important at this time to SLOW DOWN and chew your food. The longer your food remains in your mouth the better. When your food is properly chewed it is now ready to enter the stomach. When you swallow, your food goes down the esophagus where it enters the stomach and interacts with our stomach acids. You have many stomach acids that aid in digestion with the most prevalent being Hydrochloric acid or HCL. HCL is an acidic compound. This acidic environment is essential in breaking down proteins to their smaller usable parts known as amino acids.

Once your food has played around in our stomach acid for a bit it is on to its next adventure in the small intestines. After this acidic, partially digested food enters the duodenum (first part of the small intestines) the gallbladder releases bile. Bile is a substance made in the liver and stored in the gallbladder until needed. The bile, unlike HCL, is a very basic compound. When the acidic food mixture from the stomach reacts with the basic mixture from the gallbladder, a chemical reaction takes place. This reaction is designed to break down the fats in our food. This is the time that your gut microbes come out to play. These microbes are designed to continue to breakdown food particles utilizing them as food themselves and making them available to the rest of the body as nutrients.

It is important that all of these things happen in the right balance in order to properly move your food through the body. If this happens correctly your food is now ready to move through the small intestines and into the large intestines where the water is extracted, the waste compacted, and you are ready to release it from your body; aka “Cut the Crap”.

Stomach acid is critical in breaking down proteins and aiding in the reaction necessary to break down fats. Without adequate HCL in the stomach your body has no choice but to hold your food in your stomach until it naturally begins to break down through fermentation (or rotting) in order to move on to the next phase. This can cause a variety of symptoms such as burping, bloating, pain or cramping, acid re flux, and nausea after eating.

So you are learning that stomach acid is very important in the digestive process. Although, this is not all of what stomach acid does. We also need stomach acid to protect us from pathogens that may have come in with our food. With deficient stomach acid these pathogens are free to roam free causing various illnesses, infections and disease in the body. So let’s learn why this may happen.

 What causes low stomach acid?

Stress– chronic stress is one of the most common causes of decreased stomach acid.

Vitamin Deficiencies/Diet– Deficiency of Zinc or B vitamins can also lead to low stomach acid. This may be caused by diet or nutrient loss due to stress, smoking, or alcohol consumption.

Medications– Taking medications, especially antacids or ulcer medications known as PPIs for any length of time can lead to very low stomach acid. They are designed to decrease the production of stomach acid and should be considered very damaging.

H. Pylori– H. Pylori is an infection and known to be the most common cause of gastric ulcers. If left untreated it can lead to decreased stomach acid over time.

Surgeries– Surgeries such as gastric bypass have been linked to decreased stomach acid productions.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms stomach acid may be a concern:

  • Bloating
  • Burping
  • Nausea after eating, or when taking vitamins or supplements
  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn or re-flux
  • Gas
  • Desire to eat when not hungry
  • Constipation
  • Hair loss
  • Undigested food in stool
  • Fatigue
  • Weak nails
  • GI infection
  • Iron Deficiency Anemia
  • Mineral deficiency
  • Protein deficiency
  • Neurological issues, numbness, tingling, or vision changes

“How do I fix it?” you ask. Be patient that is coming. Let’s move on for now. We are still learning how things work. On to the next topic. Bile.

Bile acts as a surfactant that aids in emulsification, or in other words, mixes up the fat in your food. This allows our digestive enzymes or lipases to digest triglycerides/fatty acids. Since bile aids in the digestion of fats it is a critical part of digestion. Without proper bile or bile flow we would not be able to absorb essential vitamins such as Vitamin A, D, E and K. Undigested fats can also lead to other various ailments in the intestinal tract. Bile also contains toxins and waste from the liver. These toxins include, but are not limited to, carcinogens, pharmaceuticals, and heavy metals. The excretion of bile allows for elimination of these harmful substances. Bilirubin, a useless and toxic bi product of hemoglobin, is also broken down and excreted through bile.

What causes decreased bile or bile flow?

  • Liver congestion/gallstones- liver congestion can lead to poor bile flow due to gallstones or stagnation. Gallstones are caused from liver congestion.
  • Decreased cholesterol production- cholesterol production has been linked to bile production, if your cholesterol production is low your bile production is likely to be low as well.
  • Vitamin deficiencies- vitamin deficiencies can lead to poor bile flow.
  • Sugar or processed foods- sugar and processed food cause inflammation in the body and could potentially obstruct the bile duct.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms bile may be a concern:

  • Gas
  • Weight gain
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Irritable Bowl Syndrome
  • Crohns Disease
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Duodenal ulcers
  • Light colored stools
  • Chronic ache
  • Cramping
  • Toxicity

Now that you have a better understanding of how your body works we can start the process of healing this system.  Digestion is the foundation of health.  As we now understand, if you do not have a fully functioning digestive system you simply cannot function efficiently. Once there has been a diagnosis established, I would highly recommend incorporating an HCL and Beet Flow regiment. It is extremely vital that you do not take HCL alone as that can have negative side effects. The two supplements work hand in hand.

Lifestyle Program

This program specializes in supporting women or men of all ages who have found themselves in an over stressed or over worked state, who have put their health and well-being on the back burner and need guidance to get back on track in all areas of their life.  The people I help may be suffering with chronic digestion problems, overwhelming anxiety, or depressive episodes, trouble sleeping or a general feeling of dissatisfaction with life.

This program addresses digestion, nutritional deficiencies and diet, alignment or release of musclo-skeletal imbalances, re-programing and re-balancing of neuro-emotional patterns, along with physical and emotional health strategies.

What you will experience as the client:

We will perform some simple tests to see where there may be dysfunction in digestion or assimilation of nutrients in the body. This will give me the baseline for your initial detox diet plan and supplement protocol. We will then set up weekly body work appointments. These will alternate based on your specific needs and will include work on muscle and skeletal imbalances, chiropractic care, along with incorporating a method known as neuro-emotional release to address any emotional blocks that may be holding you back from the life you desire.

We will also set up a structured routine to support this new lifestyle that includes meditative and movement practices, mindset strategies, and goal setting. I have created a daily workbook to help you stay on track and monitor your progress.   After the initial 6 weeks you are eligible for our monthly membership that will support this new lifestyle moving forward.

Why Digestion First?

If we are going to have a talk about your health it is logical to start the conversation with digestion.  I have noticed over the years that most people today have some digestive issue that they are either dealing with currently or have experienced in the past.  Many have been dealing with these symptoms for quite some time with little or no relief, and no real answers.  If your digestion is not working you may be gaining weight, yet your body is still starving for nutrition.    This can be a scary situation that is being somewhat ignored.  If you are or have experienced chronic diarrhea, IBS, Constipation, Bloating, Acid Reflux Nausea, Bad Breath, Weight Gain or Loss, Autoimmune conditions, Joint Pain, Fatigue, Depression, Anxiety, Mood Swings, Hormonal Imbalances, or simple an overall feeling of unwell your digestion could be a factor.

Let’s start with the basics.  How does this whole system work?   It is important to note that digestion starts before we even put food in our mouths.  The aroma of the food alone starts the digestive process.  This is one of the reasons our fast food lifestyle is so damaging.  When you are not physically preparing your food, the process of smelling the food and thinking about your meal is shortened.  This disallows your body time to properly prepare for eating.

After this acidic, partially digested food, enters the duodenum (first part of the small intestines) the gallbladder releases bile.  Bile is a substance made in the liver and stored in the gallbladder until needed.  The bile, unlike HCL, is very basic compound.  When the acidic food mixture from the stomach reacts with the basic mixture from the gallbladder, an explosive chemical reaction takes place.  This explosion is designed to break down the fats in our food.

At this point all your food should be broken down into smaller, more usable parts and is ready to move through the intestinal tract.   This is the time that your gut microbes come out to play.  Your gut microbes are designed to continue to breakdown food particles utilizing them as food themselves and making them available to the rest of the body as nutrients.

It is important that all these things happen in the right balance to properly move your food through the body.  If this happens correctly your food is now ready to move through the small intestines and into the large intestines where the water is extracted, the waste compacted, and you are ready to release it from your body like a champ!

As you can see this process although not too complex has a number of moving parts.  lifestyle, pharmaceutical drugs, stress, illness, and sleep can all play a part in its efficiency.  So, what to do about it?  A green juice cleanse can be a good place to start.  By juicing for a few days your body, specifically your intestinal tract, has a chance to rest and digest all of the food currently in the system that it has not been able process fully.  This also allows a flood of nutrients into the body without having to digest them out of your food.  This is not the whole solution but can be a good start.  After you have had some time to clear out some of the junk, so to speak doing some simple physiological testing to see how your body is functioning and where your imbalances may be would be a good next step.  This allows you to see where you could use some temporary support your body up and running again.

Structure and Function

It is important in any lifestyle change to address any musculoskeletal issues you may be experiencing in order to fully bring the body into balance.  How our body moves and interprets the environment plays into our overall health and wellness.  A Musculoskeletal issue can be any injury or pain associated with joints, bones, ligaments, muscles, nerves, or tendons.  These injuries or pain can be subtle or severe.  They can arise from repetitive motion or strain, repeated exposure to force or vibration, or postural imbalance.  Addressing these issues, through chiropractic care, massage, and exercise will give you a great foundation for healing.

What is Neuro-Emotional Release?

NET is what is known as Neruoemotioinal technique. By preforming simple muscle tests our goal is to focus on and release internal dialogue, emotional, and behavioral patterns that may be hindering your health. It is based on the premise of 8 dynamics.

#1 being- Emotions are physiologically based.  Emotions do not only happen in the brain.  Emotions also trigger neuropeptides, hormones, neurotransmitters and other information substances throughout the body, thus effecting our cells and even our DNA.

#2- Emotions can be conditioned responses.  This can happen when a neutral stimulus gets coupled with a traumatic or emotional event. At this point the neutral object can elicit the same emotional response as the trauma.

#3- Emotions are directly related to the Meridian System- The meridian system is our energetic system in the body and has been used for centuries for understanding the body.

#4-Repetitive Compulsion- Once we have been emotionally traumatized or conditioned, we may unconsciously seek to repeat a similar trauma in the future.  This creates what is known as neuroplasticity in the brain and may lead to addictions.

#5 Connection between Memory and Physiology- Studies have shown that simply remembering an event can create the same physiologic response as if you were experiencing it in present time.

#6 Manual Muscle Testing or a Functional Neurology  Muscle Testing- Muscle testing is used to access your bodies inner workings. During a treatment a muscle will test “strong”, when a stress response in the body is triggered it will “weaken”.  This response can be triggered by an emotion, thought, or object.

#7- Like cures Like- During a treatment I may ask you to remember an emotion from the past, to go back and briefly re-experience the emotion in order to release it.

#8- Unresolved trauma and stored pattern of stress interrupt the bodies natural ability to heal itself.  Once identified NET helps connect mind and body allowing for the healing of physical health and stress release.

Once identified NET helps connect mind and body allowing for healing of physical and emotional stress.

I am excited to work with you!

REIKI LEVEL 1 and 2

Level 1 Reiki training will include an introduction to what Reiki energy healing is, the history or Reiki, and how Reiki works. Reiki Level 1 Attunement is a process that attunes you to the frequency of Reiki energy, enabling you to channel Reiki energy to yourself and others A level 1 attunement will allow you to:*Self-healing & Heal others
*Cleanse your environment*Release negative energy from an object or place. *Positively charge food and drinks
Reiki level 2 attunement is more subtle and higher vibration than Reiki level 1, as it further opens the chakras and increases the energy flow in your bodies. It mostly works on the mental and emotional bodies and areas that need to be cleared or resolved so that you can progress and move on in life.

Dr. Wrendy Marcinik

I would like to take a minute and introduce myself. My name is Dr. Wrendy Marcinik, and I am the owner of Real Life Chiropractic and SQeZ juice + health in Osage Beach. It has been my mission and passion to change the way we see and care for our health and well-being. It is important to me to not only educate but support our community in the journey to health and vitality. My journey has been a long one so let us start from the beginning.

As a child my family had always lived by the rules of less is more. The less you try to interfere with the bodies natural state the better. We ate real food, drank water, stayed active, and didn’t go to the doctor (unless of course our arm was falling off which luckily never came up for me). I had both of my children at home, and continued to practice these simple rules going into parenthood with my own children. I have always been fascinated with how the body works and how the body can heal in such a magical way if we get out of the way. When my mom became a Reiki Master and massage therapist when I was a teenager I was blown away by the deep feeling of connection and ease I felt with each treatment. Studying these practices with her gave me a deep sense of peace, trust, and comfort in my own body. I was exposed to a feeling of true bliss and from then I was hooked. I wanted to know everything there was to know about the energetics of the body, not simply the physicality. What I learned was that we are more than our physical body, and we can control how that physical body functions by manipulating our energetics. When my mom decided to expand her practice into teaching massage and energy work I became her first student. We studied, practiced, experimented and expanded our minds every day. I spent the next 10 years doing massage and loving every minute of. Over time, and with some experience under my belt, I felt limited in my care. I felt there was so much more to learn and ways I could help people, not only feel better, but BE better. So I went back to what I knew to do….. ask for guidance. Check back in with myself and find my next move.

This launched my desire into chiropractic. I had utilized chiropractic care before for a car accident injury but I knew there was more to it than putting the pieces back together. I knew body work and chiropractic care played a major role in connecting our mind and body and I wanted to know how this innate power communicated. It made logical sense to me that the nervous system was a good place to start exploring. So I dove in head first.

Needless to say it was a challenge. I was 33 years old, single, had 2 kids, and now full force into grad school. I told myself that that was my time…. my time to find my true passion…. my time to find a way to save the world. I started each day with fresh eyes and an open mind letting my inner guidance lead the way. But…. I was TIRED. I mean really TIRED. My ability to keep a good diet and positive mental state was increasingly difficult as time went on. I knew by my 2nd year that I needed to find a different way. I started checking out juice bars in the area to find some way of grabbing something healthy on the go. I was immediately a believer in the power of juice. I couldn’t believe how good I started to feel. I had the energy I was missing and my mental clarity started to improve. This led me to a deeper curiosity in diet and nutrition. I started studying and applying a ketogenic way of eating and my world changed overnight. I felt GOOD, really GOOD despite my crazy schedule and mental workload.

I continued to juice and practice my keto life all through my next 2 years of school. I got closer to graduation and my mind was rolling on how I wanted to set up my practice when I graduated. Did I want to stay at the lake? Did I want to buy someones practice? Start my own? Go in with an existing doctor? Did I want to stay safe and practice pain management or step into my true passion? The more I explored these options the more I knew I had to follow my heart and do all the things I loved. This is when the idea for SQeZ sparked. A place where people could come together for all their health and wellness needs, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We have now expanded our juice and smoothie bar and opened our new sister company Real LIFE Chiropractic and Healing Center. I am excited to see where this new journey takes us all. This is a time in history for growth and expansion and I am ready to do it together.
